Muscles do two things: they lengthen and shorten. Yes, lifting weights with your muscles causes them to become stronger, get bigger and change their appearance; however, increasing muscle size and doesn't happen by accident, it takes a lot more than just doing 3 sets of 10 reps.
Hypertrophy is the technical term for increasing muscle size and is the reason why many fitness enthusiasts lift weights. Dr. Brad Schoenfeld has spent a majority of his career studying the science of muscle hypertrophy and has literally written the book on the subject. Originally released in 2016, The Science and Development of Muscle Hypertrophy is the first textbook that focuses specifically on the subject of what causes muscles to grow. Dr. Schoenfeld released a 2nd edition of the book in 2020 and on this episode of the All About Fitness podcast we talk about the findings of his research, what caused him to change some of his ideas on what causes hypertrophy and discuss some of the exercise techniques that can stimulate the muscle growth you want from your workouts.
