A Sunday morning sermon by Pastor Steve Hartman. Hope is a very necessary part of the Christian life. Christian hope is not about what might happen. There is no "maybe" when the Bible speaks of hope. Hope is a confidence in what God will do in the future. The Christian life is anchored in the future--in the coming again of Jesus--in the resurrection our our bodies--in life forever in the presence of the One who loves us and gave his life for us--in God taking this whole broken world and making it completely new. We are told that our feet must be firmly planted in the present--that we must live in the present moment. There is wisdom in that, but as Christians we would add that we must trust our Lord in the present moment--in every moment in our present circumstances. However, hope--this confidence about the future--is a powerful force in strengthening us to do just that. Easily in the difficulty of the present, we can become discouraged or slide into despair or just become passive people carried along by the stormy waters of the present. That is why we must not only have our eyes on the present but on God's sure future--the future that is coming. Hope empowers endurance. When we have confidence in the future God is bringing, we are able to better persevere in difficulty--better able to trust God in the present moment--better able to trust God to bring his resurrection life into the present moment. So, let us think about the future God will bring. Especially when our present world looks bleak, let us think about the glorious future God is bringing. Let us live in hope.
