Executive Director Australian Friends Of Rambam hospital in Haifa, VERED HAREL discussed the opening of three floors of car parking as a functioning Rambam-IDF COVID-19 hospital facility, launched by the Minister of Defense and Health Benny Ganzand the IDF Deputy Chief of Staff Major General Eyal Zamir.
Israel is in the midst of its second COVID-19 wave, and Northern Israel is bearing the brunt. As the largest hospital in the north, Rambam Health Care Campus converted its Sammy Ofer Fortified Underground Emergency Hospital from a parking garage into the largest COVID-19 facility, capable of treating up to 770 patients. Teams work around the clock to provide the best possible care under unusually challenging circumstances. Everyone who enters must wear full PPE, and cannot eat, drink, or use the restrooms. They remain in the facility for two hours at a time. Patient welfare is important, and having enough lifesaving medical equipment is crucial. There is an urgent need for imaging equipment like MRI and ultrasound machines. Other urgent needs include mobile privacy partitions, earplugs, eye masks, and wall posters. Of equal importance is the wellbeing of the medical teams, who alternate between underground patient care and time above ground to rest.
