This episode of Water Cooler Neuroscience goes into the work of Seth Grant and is proudly sponsored by the Biochemical Society in the UK. People have said for years that the brain is like a computer, and well it really isn’t. The brain is much more complex than any machine and while computers have clean well designed functions and parts the brain is an impossible to decipher tangle of neurons in feedback loops and ever modifying circuits. The ends of neurons, called synapses, can be understood as machines in their own rights; not metal machines but organic computers. Seth Grant explains to us how this view of synapses are tiny machines makes sense when see the brain itself is anything but a computer.
