News Briefing: South Korean health authorities say the spread of the highly-contagious delta variant of COVID-19 could be contained if they manage to fully inoculate 85 percent of the nation's population. They said reaching such a percentage would serve as the theoretical basis that the delta variant could be kept in check without mask rules, gathering bans and operational restrictions on multipurpose facilities. In-Depth News Analysis (Korean Politics Digest): Last Sunday, the Gyeonggi Province Governor Lee Jae-myung secured the ruling Democratic Party’s ticket to run in next year’s presidential election. Meanwhile, the former Jeju governor, Won Hee-ryong, was the fourth contender for the make to make past the second cut-off for the main opposition People Power Party’s primary, alongside Prosecutor-General Yoon Seok-youl, former party chair Hong Joon-pyo, and former lawmaker Yoo Seong-min.
