News Briefing: President Moon Jae-in has announced that South Korea’s first domestically developed space rocket, Nuri, was successfully launched into space, but failed to put its dummy satellite into orbit. The rocket flew to its target altitude of 700 kilometers, and while it did not achieve its ultimate goal, Moon praised the “creditable achievement” made by the nation’s scientists and engineers.
In-Depth News Analysis (Korean Politics Digest): Gyeonggi Province Governor and presidential candidate of the ruling Democratic Party, Lee Jae-myung, faced lawmakers during two parliamentary audit sessions this week, with questions being asked over allegations of corruption related to the Seongnam land development project. Meanwhile, the main opposition People Power Party’s leading presidential contender Yoon Seok-youl has also found himself in hot water, after he made controversial comments seemingly praising the former President Chun Doo-hwan.
