Manage episode 302661749 series 2778834
Dr. Carolyn E. Holmes hops on a call with Jacob to discuss recent developments in South Africa. Western media has largely forgotten/ignored the unrest unfolding in Africa's southernmost country, and Dr. Holmes helps us understand the context around the spike in violence in the country. We'll hear about the politics of the investigations into both ex-president Jacob Zuma AND the organizers behind July's protests, RSA's skyrocketing official and unofficial unemployment numbers (think 35%+), and what may be in store for the country over the next few months.
Dr. Holmes is an Assistant Professor of Political Science and Public Administration at Mississippi State University. Her research focuses on nationalism and post-conflict transitions to democracy in sub-Saharan Africa.
